Abstract: This is a historical study of the early phase of Indian cinema from 1896-1935 to single out the pioneer Indian short and documentary filmmakers, story-based feature filmmaker and Indian cinema's first dubbing artiste and maker of first Indian film with dubbing, playback and rerecording technology. Theoretical frameworks of the study have been strengthened with concepts of new historicism apart from mass communication theories like propaganda model of media control and cognitive dissonance theory. These theories are applied to understand the gamut of issues involving pioneering innovative works in Indian cinema successfully accomplished by Harishchandra Sakharam Bhatawdekar as first Indian short and documentary filmmaker in 1899, Ramchandra Gopal Torney as the first Indian director-editor of story-based dramatised feature film Pundalik released in 1912 and Jyotiprasad Agarwala as first Indian dubbing artiste and director-producer of first Indian dubbed film with playback Joymati in 1935, and what kind of places are bestowed upon those pioneer Indian filmmakers in the common historical narrative of Indian cinema as founding fathers of the genres of short film, feature film and dubbed film. In the course of this study, extensive research by way of interviews with the relatives and associates of the pioneers were conducted and recovery of government documentations, archive materials and other important memorabilia and other publications over the last almost one century and more had been facilitated. On a broader context, early history of world cinema is also studied to make a comparative study of similar situations found among pioneer filmmakers and inventors of cine camera and technology from different corners of the world.
