Abstract: The new age of Internet has shaped several new podia for communication and interaction through discussion groups, video and voice chat, blogging, messaging email, file sharing, internet relay chats. Social networking sites have specially marked a revolutionary change by taking communication beyond boundaries and is connecting people beyond borders. With due course of time, it could be evidently seen that internet is impacting the opinion building and communication of people. Social media is also playing a pivotal role in accelerating civil society movements. Social media is becoming voice to many social movements i.e. The Damini rape case, Nirbhaya, Umbrella Movement, Hyderabad Rape case and many more.
Impact of Social Media on people's viewpoint and its impact on policy making process-In special reference of India is the research work presented for research degree in Journalism and Mass Communication wherein an attempt has been made to understand and analyze the impact of social media on people's viewpoint and its role in the policy making process.
The two major foundations of the research study presented, is to examine social media's influence on the public and to determine the role of social media in the policy making process. The factual, abstract, and logical interpretation of the interrelationships of these two dimensions is the primary objective of this research study.
2011 was a remarkable year for India wherein nation witnessed a movement which shook the government and policy makers. 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement was started across nation with the intention of establishing strong legislation and implementation against professed prevalent political corruption. The movement got its pace when anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare started hunger strike at Jantar Mantar monument in New Delhi.
The movement strongly recommended and advocated for the Jan Lokpal Bill to be introduced in the Indian political framework. The objective of Jan Lokpal bill was to alleviate corruption from the Indian political system. Role of social media was seen prevalent in this movement as it played a vital role in informing people, exchanging dialogues, communicating messages. and for imparting awareness among masses,
The mass protest focused on political corruption, kleptocracy and other practices of corruption. The entire protest had non-violent civil confrontation and comprised of hunger strikes, rallies, acts of civil disobedience, demonstrations, and marches. It was the anticorruption social movement of civil society led by Anna Hazare that resulted in the policy formation of Lokpal bill.
It was evidently seen in this campaign that gravity created by the civil society through social media platforms on government for formation of strong anti-corruption bill, the result came out as Lokpal bill. Social media played a very important role in connecting people with each other, bringing civil society together for bringing a positive change in the society, exchanging valuable inputs, and impacting the policy making process of the government.
Nirbhaya case is the groundbreaking case in the Indian History which witnessed the major changes in the rape laws in India. This case totally shook the nation and certainly the gruesome and barbaric face of rape came in front of the society, a gang rape which murdered the aspirations and dreams of a 23-year-old girl named Jyoti Singh, the name Nirbhaya (fearless) was given by Indian media to her.
There were major changes brought to the Criminal Amendment Act 2013 after the atrocious Nirbhaya case, this law is also known as anti-rape law.
The study will be conducted in the seven states of the nation including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, North East and Bihar. A data set of 500 people will be used for the study. Respondents from seven states of the nation including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, North East and Bihar region will be included in the study. Primary data will be collected through questionnaire and secondary data will be collected through research papers, books and journals.
Through this study researcher has tried to understand that how social media is actually making a difference in the civil society and is supporting social campaigns through social media platform. This study is trying to understand that how social media is impacting people's viewpoint and how that viewpoint is affecting policy making process. Campaigns which fulminated public attention were studied in this study.
